If that's the case, those of us who feel jaded after having consumed one too many of them may still need convincing.
Well, just ahead of Remembrance Day and the Royal British Legion's 90th anniversary, a new children's cook book called Recipes for Remembrance (£2.50, poppyshop.org.uk) has been launched by Helen Nathan with an exceptionally delicious recipe for spongy poppy toffee cupcakes with edible poppy flowers.
But if your wooden spoon still has energy left in it and you want to support the families of the Armed Forces, there is also No Need to Knead poppyseed bread, an Eleven O'Clock Remembrance Day cake, poppy yum yum pops and a Welcome Home cupcake tower to recreate too.
It's time get out the mixing bowl.
