Fashion's 10 hottest new trends for spring

Oh to be in London, now that spring is here! Well, nearly. What a cornucopia of delights those clever British designers have conjured up this week in London. Thou shalt not covet another woman's clothes? Darling, we defy you not to. Here are some of the hottest new trends for spring.

Puff shoulders
Y'know the pointy power shoulder that's everywhere this season? Don't get too used to it: next season it will be replaced by the puff. Just as exaggerated as its pointy counterpart, the puff is more Olive Oyl than Alexis Carrington, evoking a cuter, less power-crazy feel.

Statement trousers
Farewell, sweet drainpipes. If anything can sound the death knell for these perennial favourites, it is the statement trouser. For spring 2010, trousers are loose and very, very loud. Harlequin prints, bold florals and sequins are the order of the day.

Bandeau tops
Rubber ones! Eek! These were part of a big sportswear trend that included jogging bottoms, neoprene jackets, cycle shorts and hoodies. Ideally, wear your bandeau peeping from underneath a loose, mannish jacket. Fair play if you decide to pass on this one, though.

White
At last, a trend that's easily adapted into even the most conservative of wardrobes. This being spring, and London Fashion Week's 25th anniversary being a cause for optimism, clean, fresh white was all over the catwalk, and very refreshing it looked, too.

Romper shorts
Come on — we just gave you one wearable trend, so don't start moaning. It's all over for denim cut-offs: the new short shape is gently puffed in the manner of Andy Pandy.

Blazers

And look, here's another easy one. However avant-garde the collection, there still tended to be a blazer involved: after all, they're far more likely to sell than a rubber bandeau top. The best ones stole from classic men's tailoring but were scaled down to fit the female form.

Gazar

This stiff, sheer, versatile silk was the fabric of choice among London's more outré designers. With its glaze-like sheen, it added a romantic touch to dresses and blouses, and looked equally lovely whether worn transparent or layered over other fabrics.

Pleats
Knife-pleats, sunray pleats and Fortuny pleats ... all will be big next spring. Banish all notions of your dreary sixth-form games skirt: the new pleats are sculptural and sophisticated, and herald an end to all the girly frills that have been prevalent for so long.

Pinafores
The pinafore dress appeared in many guises, from bib-fronted and androgenous to über-coquettish with moulded breast cups. We think the first option will catch on more widely: layer a stripy T-shirt underneath and you're good to go.

Fringing
Yee-ha! — although the new fringing is less Wild West than Mae West: think silky, sexy and in delectably bright colours. Fringing adorned skirts, swung off shoulders and draped around tops, adding texture and movement.
