Hot or not: Classy Joseph is a grown-up fashion brand

JOSEPH

Joseph has all the class of the city's most illustrious designer stores without that snobbery or stuffiness familiar to so many of them.

Welcoming and personable staff made the shopping experience a relaxed one from the minute I walked through the door.

Key to Joseph's success is the amount of highly wearable fashion on offer: save for a stunning sequin jacket (£995).

The occasional beaded dress, simply cut trousers, super-soft knitwear and basic but beautiful tailoring are the mainstay of the collections on display.

A stripy cashmere sweater in off-white and navy caught my eye (£320), as did a pair of woollen cigarette-cut trousers (£450).

Though the collections are pricier than the high street, if you are prepared to invest in five key pieces, you will easily make it through the season without the need to splash much cash elsewhere.

Joseph sells staples that are not only wearable, they are made to last.

There was a soft cashmere-mix coat in black or red, perfect for pulling out winter after winter, and a selection of soft cotton long-sleeved V-neck T-shirts which looked great for layering or wearing under a classic blazer.

Joseph's footwear also hits the right notes: the butter-soft leather riding boots (£310) are top of my winter accessory wish list, with the peep-toe ankle boots coming in a close second.

One thing is glaringly obvious — this is a grown-up fashion brand and customers can expect to get what they've paid for.

Staff: friendly, helpful but not pushy
Changing rooms: simple and adequate, though a little on the small side
Price: high but worth it, especially on staples
Quality: very good, lovely attention to detail on tailoring
Best buy: tweed Lurex blazer, £515
