Losing your grip

When shopping for upmarket accessories, "solution" isn't a word you expect to hear a lot of. In fact, unless you've found yourself in the "girdle knickers" section of M&S, it's one you may never have heard at all. "Proper fashion", you see, isn't about offering solutions, it's about creating questions - and lots of them.

Imagine, then, our delight on discovering this season's breakthrough accessory trend. One whose secondary purpose in this world (after looking nice, of course) is to make the lives of fashion fiends that little bit easier for once. Let us introduce the hands-free clutch, a bag that comes with one screamingly obvious solution to benefit your eveningwear wardrobe - you don't have to hold on to it.

For those who enjoy the aesthetic value of a clutch bag but hate it on the grounds of its impracticality, this new clutch - basically an oversized wallet with a sturdy wrist strap - was a major theme on the spring/summer catwalks.

New York designer Diane Von Furstenburg detailed the soft-leather clutch bags in her latest collection with silver wrist straps, while one-time tennis label Lacoste fused practical sportswear with high-end fashion to create its own line of hands-free clutches.

At Balenciaga, Christophe Decarnin - a designer known for his innovative approach to fashion - also offered his take on the hands-free clutch in the form of an oversized puffa purse.

Now a favourite with fast-paced Londoners who have welcomed the hands-free clutch with both arms, this is a bag trend with serious staying power. Holding power, in fact.

On the high street, Topshop and Cos have been quick to take the bag style under their wings and have included this new interpretation of the clutch in their collections for the new season. Middle-market labels Sandro and Raoul are also offering a version for spring.

So, have you got your hands on one yet?
