Menswear is looking good as London gets its first 'boys only' fashion week

Men's fashion is already a key growth area in London. Now the capital is to get its own "boys only" fashion week for the first time.

The growth of spending on men's grooming means London is now at the forefront of ready-to-wear collections for men.

In previous years, Britain's menswear designers have had their collections "shoe-horned" twice a year into the final day of London Fashion Week.

But a decision by the British Fashion Council means that an event - titled London Collections: Men - will give designers and tailors the chance to participate in their own men's fashion week.

It is scheduled to take place for the first time in June, days before Milan and Paris host their menswear events.

Among the designers showcasing their work will be James Long whose pioneering knitting techniques and innovative approach to print won him this year's Fashion Forward benefit award.

Established tailoring brands including Aquascutum and Savile Row tailor Richard James will also be given a slot on the schedule.

"I am really excited about the new plans" said James Long, while Gordon Richardson, design director for high-street chain Topman - also likely to stage a show during the capital's menswear week - said he was thrilled with the announcement.

"No longer shoe-horned into one condensed, hectic day, the newly established men's showcase will have space to breathe, flourish and generate the buzz," he said.

The three day event, which could be staged at Somerset House, is the result of a concerted effort to boost Britain's menswear industry - a sector which has long played second fiddle to the traditionally more glamourous womenswear industry.

With a series of catwalk shows, salon presentations and installations, all dedicated to men's fashion, the Council hopes to attract buyers from across the globe to London.

Harold Tillman, chairman of the British Fashion Council, said: "Our menswear industry has been going from strength to strength in past years." Last year global menswear sales increased by an estimated nine per cent to £21.4 billion compared with £18.7 billion in 2010.
