New York fashion: floppy fur hats in a fairytale forest... and then the hot pants

The audience at New York Fashion Week were transported to a fantastical land last night as Marc Jacobs unveiled his latest offerings.

His fashion fairy tale took place in a make-shift forest and featured characters in oversized floppy hats and square-buckle court shoes.

Critics took to Twitter to debate Jacobs's inspiration: some said the hats were inspired by Dr Seuss, others that they resembled those worn by Jamiroquai front-man Jay Kay.

Voluminous skirts puffed out at the hips while boxy jackets in jacquard featured exaggerated collars.

Also under the spotlight was outlandish designer Betsey Johnson who put lewd shades of acid yellow and fluoro pink on the catwalk.

In this offering for autumn/winter which sometimes bordered on the downright tacky, Johnson called on faux fur, hot pants and smudged leopard print - this isn't fashion for the faint-hearted.
