The crop top - it's a crime against fashion

With every newborn litter of fashion trends comes one runt, one item of clothing so indescribably hideous that even the most die-hard fashion enthusiast is left shaking in its wake.

This season's fashion travesty lies firmly in the crop top, the most unsightly arrival on our high street since the scrunchie. Not to be confused with the slouchy cropped T-shirt styles that appeared in the shops last summer, this season's crop top is a tight-fitting phenomenon that is bra-like in form.

Certain to leave any wearer - washboard stomach or not - looking more like a guest on The Jeremy Kyle Show than a style icon, the crop top's downfall is that it leaves little - OK, nothing - to the imagination.

Early advocates include Jennifer Lopez and Leona Lewis who, in recent months, seem to have found it impossible to leave the house without one.

During a recent outing, Anne Hathaway faltered from her standard red-carpet uniform by opting for a orange and black striped crop-top style, while Rihanna was spotted in a knitted version.

In London, the gorgeous Georgia May Jagger attempted to incorporate a printed waterfall-style crop into her trademark biker look, but even on her svelte model figure the result was much more Romford than Richmond.

Women of the world, pay heed: if a Jagger can't rock this teensy top style, nobody can.
