Five places for a bacchanalian feast
31 March 2011
Blacks
67 Dean Street, W1 (020 7287 3381)
One of the main players in the fast expanding world of feasting is Black's club, which throws its doors open to non-members for "Bacchanalian Feasts". These are held on Sunday afternoons and presided over by a guest chef (Tom Parker Bowles masterminded a recent Mexican feast). The next one will be cooked by Bill Knott and takes place on Easter Sunday, April 24. £35 per head excluding drinks, booking essential.
St John
26 St John Street, EC1 (020 7251 0848, stjohnrestaurant.com)
At St John, Fergus Henderson offers a separate feasting menu. A whole suckling pig will feed 14-16 people and the "Roast beef on a dripping trencher" is also appealing. But do give the restaurant some warning.
The Ambassador
55 Exmouth Market, EC1 (020 7837 0009, theambassadorcafe.co.uk) The Ambassador holds a monthly wine dinner where dishes are created to suit the chosen bottles. The next is on Monday, £45 per person.
Hix Oyster & Chop House
35-37 Greenhill Rents, EC1 (020 7017 1930, hixoysterandchophouse)
Suckling pig feast for a minimum of eight diners. For starters, opt for the potted smoked salmon "Hix cure" then the piggy, then pud. Book ahead, £55 per person.
Viet Grill
58 Kingsland Road, E2
(020 7739 6686, vietnamesekitchen.co.uk)
This is the wild card and it would be good to know what Bacchus would make of the excellent Vietnamese lager. Give at least 48 hours' notice, round up eight accomplices and you could be tucking into a Saigon suckling pig and lobster feast (£38 per person), a Nha Trang fish and game feast (£35pp) or the Pleiku seven-dish beef feast (£35pp).
