Five Places for: shopping while you eat
10 March 2011
York & Albany and Nonna's Deli
127-129 Parkway, NW1 (020 7255 9254 gordonramsay.com) The idea that restaurants should branch out into retail is sensible. Restaurant kitchens tend to have buying power and judgment - if you have enjoyed a particular olive oil in the dining room it's handy if you can take it home. The York & Albany was previously a showcase for Angela Hartnett's Italian food and while she has moved on, things continue in the same vein. Nonna's deli is especially good for breads, oils and ripe cheeses.
The Albion
2-4 Boundary Street, E2 (020 7729 1051, albioncaff.co.uk) To get to the Albion Caff you must walk through the shop and run the gauntlet of the magnificent breads. This place embraced the social media revolution early on and you can receive a tweet when particular breads and pastries come out of the oven. British produce in the shop and British produce on the menu.
Applebee's Café
Borough Market, 5 Stoney Street, SE1 (020 7407 5777, applebeesfish.com) By day the emphasis is on the fish shop, with red snapper £14.60 per kilo. In the evening it leans towards a fish restaurant - Italian-style fish soup £6.50/£9.50.
Toku Restaurant
Japan Centre, 14-16 Regent Street, SW1 (020 3405 1222,toku-restaurant.co.uk). The Japan Centre is a hidden gem, partly because Japanese products and their labels can be impenetrable. Toku is reasonably priced and specialises in tempura.
Clarke's Restaurant
122 & 124 Kensington Church Street, W8 (020 7221 9225 restaurant 020 7229 2190 shop, sallyclarke.com) Sally Clarke's bakery business and shop fits snugly with her restaurant next door. The shop is good for breads, preserves and dishes to go. In the restaurant the food is admirably seasonal and admirably unfussy.
