Discerning drinker: online wine

The news that Berry Brothers' online sales broke the £25 million mark last year - up 72 per cent on 2010 - offers striking proof that we're changing the way we buy wine.

The St James's merchant has long been at the cutting edge of online sales but it is not alone: most wine sellers' web operations are growing much faster than in-store sales. Here are four of the best.

bbr.com
Berry Brothers offers 4,300 bottles online. It's a vast selection and includes many serious and rare bottles as well as more everyday ones. Minimum order is £100, for which delivery is free, or you can visit the shop at 3 St James's Street, SW1. Try CViguier & M Brugalière "Silex Rouge" 2009, Côtes-du-Rhône-Villages Massif d'Uchaux (£12.45). From one of the more obscure Côtes-du-Rhône villages, this grenache/mourvèdre/syrah blend boasts ripe fruit and lovely minerality.

waitrosewine.com
With more than 1,400 wines it's the best supermarket range but there are deals here not available in Waitrose stores. Delivery within five working days is free. Try Txomin Etxaniz 2010, Chacolí de Guetaria (£13.29), a highly unusual white from the Spanish Basque country. It's taut, steely and bracing - a fine accompaniment to shellfish.

thewinesociety.com
Offers around 1,200 wines and, for me, has the best-chosen large list in the business. You have to join the society to buy: membership is £40 for life but delivery is free. Janare Lucchero Guardiolo 2009, DOC Aglianico (£6.75) is a Campanian take on one of southern Italy's most distinctive red grapes, aglianico. Savoury cherry fruit and firm tannins, quite long. Good value.

yapp.co.uk
Probably the UK's leading specialist in French regional wines, especially from the Rhône and Loire valleys. It currently offers 300 bottles, many from small producers and obscure areas. For the rest of February delivery is free, after that, free for orders over £100, £10 otherwise. Try Château d'Epiré 2009, Savennières (£14.95). It's dry but rounded and surprisingly rich - a fine example of this classic Loire chenin blanc.
