Get edgy with your hair - side partings are back in fashion

Pick a side — any side — but if you do one thing this summer, make sure you ditch that tired old centre parting.

Side-partings are back and they're more extreme than ever.

It was Proenza Schouler who sent models down the runway with side-scraped hair that was pure Jerry Hall, (the original poster girl for the side-parting).

Now, everyone in the in-crowd — from Alice Dellal to Coco Sumner — is working their parting ear-wards to add a tougher, more dramatic edge to their look in seconds.

"The new extreme side-parting should be clean, very straight and about halfway between the ear and the natural centre of your head," says hair stylist Tara Smith, who works with Kim Cattrall, Marisa Tomei and Natalie Imbruglia.

"Use a pintail comb to section off the hair at one side then apply a super-strong holding product such as my Rock On Hard gel to slick down the area just above the ear. Finally, sweep the rest of the hair to the other side and tong it to get that Jerry-esque volume and loose wave."

So start flipping your hair left, right — just not centre.
