A new study has found acupuncture can be more effective at relieving aches and spasms than traditional medications.
Here four of London's top acupuncturists explain how they'll cure your back pain - whatever the causes and symptoms.
THE MEDICAL MULTI-TASKER
Dr Nish Joshi
Dr Joshi has long used acupuncture to treat members of the Royal Ballet for back pains and is one of the most eminent natural therapists in the UK.
USP: Dr Joshi uses a form of medical acupuncture, inserting needles into the muscles at the localised area of pain to encourage blood flow and the release of feel-good, pain-dulling endorphins.
Cost: Initial consultation £180 per hour; follow-ups £120 per hour.
Where: The Joshi Clinic, 57 Wimpole Street, W1; 020 7487 5456, www.joshiclinic.co.uk.
THE CHINESE MEDICINE MASTER
Professor Mei
A professor at Shanghai's University of Chinese Medicine, Mei is a leading expert in traditional acupuncture.
USP: Chinese medicine relies on finding the underlying syndrome causing the back pain; lower back pain can signal kidney problems while aches higher up may be related to the liver area. Pain is treated using needles in corresponding "meridian points" on the feet or torso to relieve what the Chinese call "energy blockages".
Cost/time: Initial consultation £35 for 45 mins; follow-ups £25 for 45 mins.
Where: China Life; 99-105 Camden High Street, NW1; 08700 100 023, www.chinalifeweb.com
THE EMOTION-RELATED PAIN EXPERT
Sharon Subner
Having trained at London's Traditional School of Oriental Medicine, Sharon now treats everyone from Kelly Hoppen to top politicians.
USP: Believing most pains stem from emotional causes, Sharon takes a therapy-meets-acupuncture approach. Needles are used on emotional stimulus points like hand and heart.
Cost: £90 for 45 minutes.
Where: 12A Colville Mews, W11; 020 7792 5623.
THE SPORTS PAIN SOLVER
Ethan Stone
With more than 20 marathons and training at LA's Institute of Psychostructural Balancing to his name, Ethan treats sports-related pain.
USP: Ethan combines Therapeutic Deep Tissue Massage at the site of back pain by using needles elsewhere on the body to address stress or lifestyle-related factors compounding the repetitive injury spasms incurred in sports such as golf and tennis.
Price: £120 per hour
Where: 3 Jubilee Place, SW3; 020 7351 3332; www.stephen-price.com.
