How to Succeed as a Yogi by Bikram Choudhury

Calcutta-born Bikram began practising yoga when he was four and by 13 had won the National India Yoga contest.

He is now 63, with a multi-million pound business, including 1,700 Bikram Yoga studios worldwide.

His website hotbikramyoga.co.uk receives thousands of daily hits and his mantra is that we are "never too old, never too late, never too sick or never too bad to start from scratch and begin again".

While in London last month he told me how to be successful:

BELIEVE IN YOUR WORK
I knew from the start that mine and ultimately the lives of millions of Bikram followers would improve. I drew upon old and scientifically proven techniques that have opened up a pathway to health and happiness.

BE OUTSPOKEN
I am tough and sometimes I tell it like it is. Tough love can work wonders. After all, Bikram Yoga is a rigorous, body-bending challenge but you'll keep coming back for more.

TEACH AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE
I have both English bulldog determination and Bengal tiger strength. Growing up in Bombay I saw many sick people. I started a new concept of teaching in groups, developed my postures and saw the effects.

MEET PEOPLE
In 1973, I received help from the then President, Richard Nixon, plus a few Hollywood superstars. Then I was able to open my first school.

LIVE THE HARD WAY
For months I slept at work, even though I had an apartment. I'd fall asleep on the floor at 4.30am. By 7am I was up and ready to start teaching every class.
