Les Carroz: Skiing in the shadow of Mont Blanc

While the weak pound persuaded many of us to forgo a summer holiday abroad - it seems the British are still willing to fund our long-standing love affair with Alpine ski resorts.

But the strength of the Euro means that many skiers and snowboarders are sticking to what they know to lessen the chances of a nasty surprise when the bill arrives.

And it was with that in mind that I returned to the resort of Les Carroz where I had finally learned to ski last winter and still managed to escape with my bank balance the right side of red.

Les Carroz has everything you need to enjoy the perfect winter sports holiday whether you are a beginner or experienced skier or snowboarder.

The friendly French village in the Haute-Savoie, close to Mont Blanc, is handily situated just three quarters of an hour by car from Geneva airport - meaning you can be on the slopes within a few hours of your plane touching down.

There are a range of apartments and chalets on offer from the budget end of the scale to luxury accommodation complete with an indoor swimming pool.

Families visiting the resort can choose from a host of reasonably priced restaurants, while those hoping for a night out are catered for by lively bars and even a nightclub.

A delayed flight meant we didn't reach our apartment until late afternoon on the first day and it looked like we might not get any skiing in at all.

There had been heavy snowfall that day and, with no car, getting down to the village and back to hire gear was going to be an arduous a task.

But, luckily, a local told us about the shuttle bus offered by the SkiSet and New Loc stores in the centre of Les Carroz. The excellent door-to-door service meant we were ready to go within an hour of arriving.

And, though it may not be as well known as some resorts among British skiers, Les Carroz offers access to one of the most beautiful Alpine ski areas - the Grand Massif - with 265 kilometres of slopes.

The free bus service up and down the mountain allows you to make the most of your holiday and the helpful staff in the tourist office are always willing to point you in the right direction.

All in all Les Carroz provides the complete winter sports holiday package and offers you every reason to visit again and again.
