Season of strange fruit...

There's a revolution taking place in your fruit bowl this January. While news from America suggests that medlar fruits are about to make a comeback over here, three other unusual fruits are worth taking note of: bring out the guanabana, the nectacot and the lulo.

One has green spiky skin like a pineapple but the flavour of an unsweetened lychee, the aptly named nectacot is a cross between a tart nectarine and a sweet apricot, and another looks like an unripe tomato but tastes like an apple and an orange.

Last week, M&S increased its stock of nectacots and a new range of juices made from exotic "fruit nectars" - including guanabana, lulo and Andean blackberry - has been launched by JUNA, a Euro-Colombian startup company. Its co-founder Christian Kaufholz says the fruits are hugely popular in Colombia and that Londoners are ready for something different.

"This is all about satisfying the human need for variety and discovery. We want to break with the same old tones of apple, orange or grape which form the basis to all fruit drinks in the market today." If ever there was a time to get juicing, it's now.

JUNA juices £2.10, Selfridges and Borough Market, junafruits.com; nectacots £2.99/6
