The Discerning Drinker: best wines from Spain
13 May 2010
Viña Costeira 2009, Ribeiro (Waitrose £7.99)
This fresh Galician white, made mostly from the local treixadura grape, is more fragrant than the region's more common albariño (of which there's a dash in this). Light (11.65 per cent alcohol) and fresh.
Burgans Albariño 2009 (Oddbins, £10.99)
A fine example of Galicia's most popular white, this albariño has bags of juicy, peachy fruit, with some depth, all undergirded with a firm acidity.
Miros Organic Tempranillo 2005, Ribera del Duero (Corney and Barrow, £10.99, mail order only, corneyandbarrow.com; you can mix cases; orders under £200, delivery £12.50)
Rich, sweet, expressive fruit with fine structure and balance: very good, from one of Spain's most serious red wine regions.
Mas de Subira 2006, Priorat (Majestic, £12.99 or £7.99 each when you buy two)
In the 20 years since it has gone from parched, rustic backwater to producer of hip international blockbusters, Priorat's reds have got terribly expensive: there's not a lot under £20. So this is good value for what it is — a blend of garnacha, cariñena and cabernet sauvignon, this is big, meaty, sweet and uncompromising. Amazing value on the two-bottle deal.
Ribas del Cua 2003, Bierzo (Iberica, 196 Great Portland St, W1, £19.79)
I've raved before about reds from Bierzo, in Spain's north-west, just east of Galicia; this one is quite magnificent. Warm, sweet fruit, mature tannins, nice balance — impressive.
