Conservation is my passion - and I love doing the work

"I love being outside and doing the work improves your fitness – it's all-round physical exercise for the body and good for your mental health too.
"I got involved because I wanted to set up a food growing project in Ireland and approached BTCV to learn conservation skills. I started as a volunteer officer, leading groups of up to twenty Green Gym volunteers clearing sites, building steps, improving access, planting trees and generally making green areas more pleasant.
"One of my first projects was a tiny overgrown woodland area behind a housing estate which we cleared of rubbish and turned into an open space that local people can use. I've since got involved in a number of projects around London, including a food-growing project and the Transition Towns movement which helps make communities more sustainable. It's a passion for me.
"There's lots of green space in this city that needs looking after and it's is easy to get involved. For anyone thinking about doing it, don't hesitate, it's a unique way to discover the city, learn skills, make friends and enjoy the outdoors. It's not just about helping the environment – it's about inspiring people and improving life skills."
BTCV runs a number of environmental projects including the Green Gym in Camden, supported by NHS Camden. While the world talks at the UN Climate Change Summit during December, BTCV's Carbon Army of volunteers will be taking frontline action helping to conserve green spaces and keep cities cool.
