Britons 'claw back £2.7bn with money off vouchers'

9 Nov 2009

Saving-savvy Britons use two million money off vouchers per day clawing back £2.7 billion per year, research suggested today.

Price comparison website moneysupermarket.com found that more than 1,500 reduction vouchers are redeemed every minute, saving shoppers just over £56 per month each.

The number of vouchers used has risen 6% in the last six months, and 38% of consumers use a discount voucher twice a week or more.

More than half of those polled (57%) said they used restaurant vouchers on a regular basis, 54% used vouchers for clothes and 47% in supermarkets.

In the run up to Christmas 46% said they would be using discount vouchers to buy presents.

Sian Harrison from moneysupermarket.com said: "Our research shows that the vouchers are becoming an expected and valued part of our shopping routine.

"A few years ago it would have been unheard of for people to pay for Christmas presents using vouchers - now almost half of us won't be shopping without them.

"It's a clear reaction to living in more cash-strapped times when retailers and restaurants are desperate for us to spend with them and must offer discounts in order to compete."
