Top Secret night out

31 Aug 2006

Rahul Verma surveys the London club scene and comes up with four gems to keep you on your dancing toes this weekend, kicking off with Best Kept Secret at the Medicine Bar...

Best Kept Secret
Sat, Best Kept Secret, Medicine Bar, 89 Great Eastern Street EC2, 9pm to 3am, £7. Tel: 0871 332 6418. www.medicinebar.net Tube: Old Street
Best Kept Secret has been bringing left-field dance music to the UK through its DJ and artist management arm for four years and has rapidly become a key player in the world of Gilles Peterson-related sounds. This Saturday, its monthly Medicine Bar residency doubles as the launch party for Ninja Tune duo Zero DB's Bongos, Beats And Basslines LP. It's a thrilling ride that does exactly as the title suggests, flitting from house to hip hop with a jazzy, electronic and Brazilian touch. A soundtrack that's sure to work brilliantly in this intimate club setting.

Bash
Tonight, Plastic People, Curtain Road EC2, 147 Curtain Road, 10pm to 2am, £5. Tel: 020 7739 6471. www.plasticpeople.co.uk Tube: Old Street
As two of London's most respected and inventive DJs and producers, Kevin Martin (aka The Bug) and Loefah (DMZ) have built a bridge between their respective dancehall and dubstep sounds with club night Bash. Tonight features digital dancehall from The Bug and chilling, minimal dubstep from Loefah and Mala. There'll also be other kindred genres, including grime with Roll Deep's Flowdan and reggae from Singjay YT, showcasing recent debut LP Straight Outta Britain.

Sac A Magique
Tomorrow, Sac A Magique, Industry, 1 Curtain Road EC2, 9pm to 2am, £5. Tel: 0871 223 5562. Tube: Liverpool Street
Help's Sac A Magique offshoot has brought impromptu nights with guests including Frank Tope and DJ Friendly to London since 2004. Tomorrow it takes over the swish surroundings and thumping sound system of Industry. Scratch Pervert DJ Plus One headlines, taking in anything he feels like, as well as party hip hop. Residents Slim, Karl Rodgers and DJ Ray will keep the dance floor moving, with a carefree soundtrack of broken beat, boogie, disco and house.

Bounce!
Sat, Bar Rumba, Shaftesbury Avenue W1, 9pm
to 4am, free before 10pm, £10 after, £6 concs. Tel: 07939 091493. www.barrumba.co.uk Tube: Leicester Square

Bounce! may be the flagship night for the British booty breaks scene, an amalgam of Miami bass, breaks and booty bass, but its music policy follows a simple rule of thumb: if it doesn't make you bounce, it's not getting played. Saturday sees an extremely rare DJ date from British garage producer MJ Cole, with support from Beni G (Mixologists) and Cutlass Supreme, joining the dots between crunk, grime and bashment.
