Downloads to dominate charts

Music downloads could soon dominate the Top 40 after music stores agreed to a change in chart rules.

At the moment, downloads of a song only count on the singles chart from a week before it is released on CD and two weeks after the CDs stop being made.

But the Entertainment Retailers' Association has said all digital sales should count and new rules are likely to come in on January 1. Legal song downloads now account for 78 per cent of British singles sales.

Two years ago, the figure was 23 per cent. The change could see a return to songs climbing the charts as they gain momentum online.

This week's No.1 - I Don't Feel Like Dancin' by the Scissor Sisters - sold almost 45,000 digital copies before becoming eligible for the main chart, according to Music Week magazine.
