Pop icon Michael Jackson is to make his first public appearance in Britain in nine years when he attends the World Music Awards in London in two weeks.

The star, who has recently been living in Ireland, will receive a Diamond Award, which recognises artists who have sold more than 100 million albums, at the Earls Court Arena on November 15.

Past recipients of the award include Rod Stewart, Mariah Carey, Bon Jovi and Celine Dion.

Jackson, 48, is reportedly recording a comeback album after he was cleared of child molestation charges in America. His last British public appearance was during a concert tour in 1997.

Awards founder Melissa Corken said his presence at the ceremony would be 'very exciting'. The awards are the world's most televised music show with a global audience of 1billion.

They have been held in the US for the past two years.

Actress Lindsay Lohan will host the show and Beyoncè, Mary J Blige and Katie Melua will sing. Channel 4 will broadcast the awards on November 22.
