The long and winding queue
Alexa Baracaia, Evening Standard22 Nov 2006
Sir Paul McCartney still has his loyal fans - hundreds queued around the block today for a glimpse of the man and a scribbled signature.
Devotees of the former Beatle were camped outside Piccadilly's Virgin Megastore, waiting for him to arrive to sign copies of his new classical album and DVD. Sir Paul, 64, was due to appear at midday, but many of his followers turned up as early as 4pm yesterday.
They came from as far afield as Florida and Australia. There were couples in their sixties who remember the Beatle from before a certain Heather Mills was born.
McCartney's estranged wife - whose leg was amputated below the knee following a road accident - has just appeared on US TV, saying she was utterly in love with Sir Paul when they married, adding of their split: "I would rather someone come up and chop off all my limbs than go through what I went through."

Excellent Comments.. I remember being 10ft away from him back in '90 in Germany with his band.. I SURE MISS LINDA..! It was the best ever and yes, ALWAYS, camp out, do whatever you have to do.
Time is so.. very.. short.

I’m one of those crazy fans who have waited in line for days at a time for a once in a life time of 30 seconds of glory meeting and I can tell you is it is all about passion! It is not abour a scawly signature on a piece of paper at all! It is about reaching for the stars with all your might and will and making your dreams come trough while your are alive and still kicking! It is about living your life to the fullest and no regrets behind! It is about having a dream and going for it, leaving every thing and everyone on hold and behind for the moment! It is living life to its fullest, so that when tomorrow comes you can look happily back and say ‘No regrets, I did it, I was there, I went for it!” It is a matter of loving someone beyond time, space and understanding so much that you want to give back some kind of support in return for all the wonder and joy provided to your life. It is a matter for being there to show support to the one that has made your life so beautiful all along with his songs and his music! It is not a matter of a scrawly signature. It is a matter of being 1-1 present and unique with the one you love for a few special seconds. It is a matter of seing eye on eye the one that has inspired you to keep on going through out life!
I know when I’m old and decrepit, wasting away in a wheelchair, these are the wonderful memories that will see me through my decaying days, no regrets!
Carpe deium! As simple as that!

I hope Paul laughed off the latest ridiculous comments made by his soon to be ex-wife. We in the US are. I hope Paul and his fans have a great day.

I had no idea there were so many unemployed McCartney fans out there! Have none of these people got lives or responsibilities? I think that anyone prepared to sleep out on the streets in this freezing weather just to have someone scrawl in black marker pen on a DVD needs help. Seriously now!

I love Sir Paul and in this difficult time for him it is important that we all show him how much we support him. I think that it's great that people feel so strongly and are such big fans that they are willing to camp out on the streets to see him.
God bless you Paul and every one of your fans.
