Jarvis Cocker is to play the V Festival for the first time in 11 years, it has been announced.

The former Pulp frontman inspired the idea of the two-venue event in the first place.

In 1995, Cocker said he would like to play two outdoor gigs in two days, allowing fans in the north and south to see the same band.

Pulp's promoters came up with a plan for the festival and the first V took place the following year. Cocker has not performed there since, but is back this year as a solo artist.

The Killers, Foo Fighters and Snow Patrol are headlining the event over the weekend of 18-19 August at Hylands Park in Chelmsford, Essex, and Weston Park, Staffordshire.

Lily Allen, Kanye West, The Fratellis, Kasabian and Babyshambles are also on the bill.

Besides Cocker, new acts announced today include Dizzee Rascal, Ocean Colour Scene and The Cribs.

Festival director Bob Angus said: "V Festival is all about having something for everyone and these new acts represent this ethos perfectly.

"Plus, with another 50 acts still to be announced, we're on track to what we are confident will make up one of the strongest line-ups in history."
