The Spitz given six months to quit Spitalfields

One of London's best-known live music venues is facing closure following a dispute with its landlord.

The Spitz, a favourite with Russell Brand, Damon Albarn and model Lily Cole, has been given six months to leave its premises in Spitalfields Market.

Supporters, including singer Beth Orton and designer Giles Deacon, say the move will leave a "cultural void" that cannot be filled.

Set up 10 years ago by arts charity The Dandelion Trust, the Spitz has hosted concerts by Goldfrapp and indie band The Bluetones.

Despite the Spitz's insistence that it has kept up with payments, landlord Ballymore Properties claims otherwise.

Mark Grant, head of estate management, said: "We need occupiers who can meet their financial obligations. We have therefore agreed terms with a new operator."

Save The Spitz! This is outrageous! It is one of the best venues in London to see unsigned bands and it would be terrible for bands and music lovers if it had to close.

The Spitz is a great venue, well located close to the City and of course Spitalfields and Brick Lane, and it would be a huge loss to the emerging bands who regularly appear on the stage there. I have been there twice to see one of my favourite bands The Transmitters and they have blown the audience away on both occasions.

The decision to remove another of London's smaller venues is a disgrace, London's musical heritage is vast and with so many bands wanting to play new venues should be encouraged - not taken away. We don't all want to stand in Wembley Arena being bulled by the smoking fascists, or in the empty atmospheres of Ally Pally and Docklands.

I love the Spitz, it would be a great shame if it went. London needs these smaller more intimate venues.
