Soul siren: Amy's voice is going from strength to strength

Winehouse a hit in the jazz world

She may have lost to Arctic Monkeys at the Brit Awards but Amy Winehouse has at last won a trophy for her acclaimed album Back To Black.

Her best-selling record was named the British jazz crossover album of the year in the Ronnie Scott's Jazz Awards last night. The ceremony, billed as the Brits of the jazz world, took place at the popular nightclub in Central London.

Earlier this year Winehouse completed a successful tour of the US. She appeared on David Letterman's late night TV chat show and held a series of gigs across the country.

One reviewer said the 23-year-old's new album showed her transformation from jazz vocalist to soul siren.

Also at the Ronnie Scott awards, soul singer turned- jazz diva Mica Paris was named British jazz crossover artist of the year, while Van Morrison won international male singer of the year.

Jamie Cullum, 27, was named the best British male singer and Tony Bennett collected the Ronnie Scott's Lifetime Achievement Award.

Ronnie Scott's is known as one of the world's best jazz clubs and some of the jazz masters including Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald and Jimi Hendrix have performed there.

Ronnie Scott opened his first club in 1959 with friend and fellow tenor saxophonist Pete
King. He was inspired by his trips in the late 1940s and early 1950s to the jazz clubs
in New York.
