Stoned circle: Revellers celebrate the summer solstice on Banksy's "Stonehenge" at Glastonbury

Stocking up: With stormy weather forecast for the festival, retailers get the wellington boots ready

Glastonbury revellers welcomed the summer solstice dancing on top of a "Stonehenge" of festival lavatories created by artist Banksy today.

They celebrated the year's longest day after a rare dry night at the site in Pilton, Somerset, which is due to host 180,000 music fans at the weekend.

Another 24,000 revellers gathered at the real Stonehenge to watch dawn break. English Heritage, which runs the 5,000-year-old Wiltshire site, said numbers swelled above a predicted 20,000 as many en route to Glastonbury joined the party. A spokeswoman said: "Sunrise was not very spectacular this year because of the cloud."

Those hoping for a brighter weekend at Glastonbury look set to be disappointed with thunderstorms and torrential rain set to make this year's event one of the wettest and muddiest yet. A Met Office spokesman said: "There will be some sunny spells, but there's no doubt festival goers will be looking at a very muddy weekend. It'll be fairly similar in London but at least people won't have to put up with a sea of mud."

Retailers are reporting record sales of Wellington boots and waterproof jackets and the AA is predicting gridlocked roads as fans converge on Glastonbury.

Those staying in London can select from a huge programme of events this weekend. The biggest is Hyde Park Calling, featuring acts including Aerosmith, Peter Gabriel and Crowded House. Tickets are still available for Sunday. Foodies will be able to swap festival veggie burgers for Taste of London in Regent's Park, while the Camberwell Arts Festival offers a selection of exhibitions in south-east London. Free outings include music event LockStock at the Lock Tavern in Camden, Architecture Week - offering the opportunity to explore London's great buildings - and parts of the Greenwich Alive Festival.
