Ronnie Scott's: We will present the finest jazz
By Louise Jury, Evening Standard 12.12.07The owner of Ronnie Scott's has pledged to uphold its tradition of booking great jazz players.
Speaking after last week's departure of Leo Green, the club's artistic director, amid concerns the club was hosting pop and soul acts, Sally Greene said she would continue to present the highest quality music.
But she suggested there would be fine-tuning of the club's programme.
She said: "We have for some weeks now been in the process of recruiting a new managing director who, following consultation with key industry figures, as well as the extended creative team at Ronnie Scott's, will finesse and deliver the future vision for this iconic venue."
Mr Green, 33, son of saxophonist and broadcaster Benny Green, left after emailing industry contacts lamenting a lack of jazz knowledge from some of his fellow managers.
He insisted he only booked the acts and was not responsible for other policies. Jazz-lovers have criticised a rise in ticket and membership prices since the change of ownership two years ago and a refurbishment that cost more than £2 million.
But Ms Greene, a jazz fan, insisted the club was well placed to build on its "world-class jazz performance schedule". Future plans include "an ambitious digital content strategy" alongside live performance.
