Oasis definitely (not maybe) No.1
By Jo Steele, Metro 18.02.08Britpop veterans Oasis have beaten their heroes, The Beatles, to top a new chart of the best British albums of all time.
Fans voted the Manchester group's first two LPs ahead of established classics by The Fab Four, The Clash and the Rolling Stones.
The Gallagher brothers' 1994 debut, Definitely Maybe, came top in the poll and the follow-up album (What's The Story) Morning Glory?, came second.
Radiohead's 1997 haunting offering OK Computer took third place, followed by The Beatles' Revolver in the vote conducted by Q magazine and record chain HMV.
Q editor Paul Rees said: "It's clear that, having polled three times more votes than any other act, Oasis are undoubtedly the nation's most loved band."
Rudy Osorio, of HMV, added: "As our perspective changes, many more of us are starting to recognise the iconic appeal of Oasis and the
brilliance of Definitely Maybe as an era-defining album."
The chart of 50 Best Ever British Albums also featured records by The Clash, Pink Floyd, Depeche Mode, The Smiths and Queen.
More recent artists to make the cut in the survey include Keane, Arctic Monkeys and Amy Winehouse – the only female singer on the list.
