Getting to know The Metros
By Amira Hashish, Evening Standard 24.06.08It's a busy time for The Metros. They are playing most of the big summer festivals including Glastonbury, Zoo Thousand and Eight and Picnic Rocks on Clapham Common. The boys took some time out of their schedule so that we could get to know them a little better...
THE METROS ON:
History
We have known each other since we were really young. Three of us went to school and grew up together. Eventually we all formed the group.
Making the band
We never sat down and had a meeting about the band, it was just something we fancied setting up. We were in different groups before but this one just seemed to work well. There was never a game plan though. We know someone who's band sent a demo off to Rough Trade before they even started playing a few gigs.
Getting signed
Our manager is a bit of what you would call an impulse buyer when it comes to bands. He saw us and liked us. We played some gigs and people turned up. He had an idea of what he wanted to do with us so we rehearsed, got better and played more.
Transition
It has been a big transition since getting signed but we have had time to adjust. A couple of us still had school to finish when we joined the label. We're young man. We haven't had a chance to think about being anyone else. When we used to say we were leaving school to do gigs people wouldn't believe us. Our friends were like, 'have you actually got a proper deal now then?'
Songwriting
All of us write songs. We get our ideas from stuff that has happened. We enjoy doing it. It did get to a point where we needed proper material for an album so we had to focus on it for a while then. Otherwise, we just pen stuff for fun. The record is out in September. We have two singles coming out soon too.
Touring
We have been on tour for a long time and are really enjoy it. We hardly get any sleep though because we're always on the move.
Home
We like hanging out in South London because that is where most of us come from. It's where loads of our friends are too.
Millions
If we were given a million pounds we would pay One night Only to quit their band, lock them in a cage and make them fight snakes all day long. A monkey army with peanuts could annoy them.
Dream dates
There are a few people we'd really like to date. Brigitte Bardot, Amy Winehouse, Keira Knightley, Johnny Depp and Marlon Brando are some examples.
The Ultimate goal
In the future we would like to own job centres. We could then put something back into Peckham and help the kids.
