Charming goths bring the (haunted) house down

"Has anyone else got a skeleton costume on?" asked Natasha Khan as she arrived on stage with a pumpkin.
There was a grim reaper but no one came close to the Halloween chic of the Bat For Lashes singer, whose creepy cat suit was offset by a sharp black fringe and glittery make-up.
Khan's unearthly vocals made for a suitably haunting performance, and her songs tended towards the magical and mysterious. The Wizard, for instance, had a rustling rhythm and the lyric "drink his blood", which sounded strangely seductive.
But the surprise was her natural ability as a pop star. There was a giggly charm as she urged us to make ghoul noises during I Saw A Light, but a more threatening presence when she later struck the stage with a big stick to provide pounding percussion.
There was also much swapping of instruments with her female band mates, and Khan played - among others - hand bells, military drums and the lovely, chiming autoharp.
Bat For Lashes might have a touch of the goth - but they are much more than that. With Khan's strong voice, easy charisma and fantastical vision, she could well have the mainstream appeal of Bjork or Kate Bush.
