Smiley siblings show their serious side

They may have been away for a while, but little has changed about west London siblings The Magic Numbers.
They may even be wearing the same clothes as last time around, and their faces are still entirely composed of hair and smiles.
Their fans are just the same, too, still clapping along in all the right places, whooping in raptures whenever Angela Gannon takes over the singing from band leader Romeo Stodart, still cheering at such length between songs that Romeo can barely introduce the next one.
This joy that the band induces everywhere may be their chief selling point, but this month's second album seems weighed down by a desire to be taken more seriously. Packed with ballads and the melancholy string arrangements of Robert Kirby (who conducted this evening) taken as a whole it's a bit of a downer.
However, in concert a smattering of slowies, such as Boy and Michele Stodart's emotional Take Me or Leave Me, offered a welcome counter to the ceaselessly sunny older material. They've proved there are more colours to their palette, but we may have to wait until album number three for them to get the balance right on record.
