This Lil' star is rising
Martha de Lacey, London Lite 15 Dec 2006
Ah, the tough life of a rock star; girls swooning and underwear being flung at your head. Except, in Lil' Chris's case, the girls are impassioned six-year-olds and it's crop tops they're excitedly flinging before keeling into the arms of an irritated parent.
It wasn't finding themselves at a concert of the littlest star of Channel 4's Rock School that was annoying adults, but the fact that caring for their dehydrated tot meant missing a moment of Chris's head-bangingly rocktastic performance. The instant Chris Hardman catapulted from the wings, flicked his cap over his freckled head and punched the air with his lil' fist, hundreds of tiny feet began to bounce. And by the second song the big ones were far from motionless. It was pure entertainment. He's got the standard rock moves down to a T - squealing when his band kicks in, fingers jabbing the air, working the crowd, air guitar.
There's even a sprinkling of Barry White charm: "Here's one for you ladies," slapped with his mischievous Lowestoft slant "and you pretty boys too." This cheeky charm relieves some stage-schooled moves (courtesy of Kiss's Gene Simmons). Stunts like wrapping himself up in microphone cord add charisma to his infectious songs. He's the Robbie of entertaining rock.
But it'll be interesting to see how he plays it. Because at 16 there's only so long he can milk being cute as a button before it gets weird.
