Low Vs Diamond
Low Vs Diamond: on the cusp of greatness

Joe Muggs, London Lite 24 Jan 2007

Let's not beat about the bush here: Low Vs Diamond, slightly unwieldy name aside, have got what it takes to be fearsomely big.

You needn't take my word for it, though - they've already been picked up by The Killers' manager after a single gig, and among the music industry types gathered at the indie rock cubbyhole that is Water Rats last night, was Razorlight's manager, hanging attentively on their every move.

That should give you an idea of the kind of arena-sized mega-indie we're dealing with here - LVD deal in unashamedly epic, romantic songs, and their perfectly honed sound seemed to be straining to reach past the "impress me" faces of the muso crowd to a wider waiting public.

They looked the part, too: skinny, good looking in a just-nerdy-enough-to-be-cool way, with tousled indie-mop hair and an impressive afro on drummer Howie Diamond. Lead singer Lucas Field was constantly clad in black Ray-Bans - perhaps a nod to the moodily impassioned singers of Echo & The Bunnymen and Psychedelic Furs, whose early-Eighties sounds rang through the set.

His vocals certainly had some of Ian McCulloch or Richard Butler's louche styles, but also that post-Radiohead falsetto wail on the soaring choruses in every song. There was never any of the apologetic prissiness that affects some emotive bands, though - partly because Field's voice is simply richer than most, and partly because LVD aren't afraid to unashamedly rock.

The band's demeanour was humble given the size and confidence of their sound. It will be interesting to see whether success makes them as kooky as the Killers or as arrogant as Razorlight, but for now the combination of likeability and musical ambition is possibly unique.

Details are correct at the time of publication - please check with venue before booking.

Incredible sound. Hope I can hear them when they are in the SF Bay Area.

I'm really happy to see one of my favourite bands is getting wonderful recognition. Please send them back across the pond soon!
