Small on songs, big on heart

Passion: The Little Ones put their all into every note
Passion: The Little Ones put their all into every note

Marcus Foley, London Lite 26 Jan 2007

Do you find Kaiser Chiefs a bit too ironic? Perhaps you would prefer Razorlight to be a bit more pop? If so, The Little Ones could well be the band for you.

The vibe is more Liverpool than LA and were it not for the Spanglish banter between songs, they could easily be just another UK indie group.

What sets the California quintet apart is the level of passion and belief they have in their music. With five beaming smiles broader than the Atlantic, they put their all into every note. So much so, that even when a song drifted into derivative realms, the ardent enthusiasm seemed to make up for it.

There is also something very likeable about a band who unashamedly use tambourines, maracas and a fair few rock n' roll clichÈs with such sincerity.

Counted in intros, cymbal-crashing outros, this is pop-rock in a small venue, but designed with stadiums in mind.

A great live performance can't disguise a lack of truly great material, however they shrewdly saved their best tunes for last.

Face The Facts and forthcoming single Oh MJ caused outbreaks of smiles like a healthy dose of musical Prozac.

In the end, the band looked like they would happily have played all night, and if they had the repertoire, there wouldn't have been too many complaints.
