Basement Jaxx
Coming home to Brixton: Basement Jaxx bring their carnival back south

By David Smyth
27 Jul 2007

Basement Jaxx warm-up for the imminent V Festival and the Scissor Sisters play two giant Dockland shows this weekend.

Basement Jaxx
Brixton Academy, SW9

The long-running dance duo bring their onstage carnival back to their spiritual home of Brixton once more, as both a warm-up for their imminent V Festival set and also to raise money for four different charities. (0844 477 2000). Tonight, 7pm.

Ben & Jerry's Sundae
Clapham Common, SW5

A weekend of decent feelgood bands and, more importantly, free ice cream, on Clapham Common. Pile on the pounds to the sounds of Kate Nash, the Bees and the Feeling tomorrow, and the Holloways, the Ordinary Boys and the Proclaimers on Sunday. Some tickets at the gate, Sat 28, Sun 29 Jul, noon-8pm.

King Creosote
Koko, NW1

Kenny Anderson is the King, and a key figure in Fife folk troupe the Fence Collective. This is an early chance to hear tracks from his fourth album, Bombshell, released 10 September. (0870 432 5527). Sun 29 Jul, 7pm.

Scissor Sisters
O2 Arena, SE10

The glam pop New Yorkers wind up the promotion of big-selling second album Tadah with two giant Docklands shows. Never knowingly understated, expect numerous outlandish costumes and an extravagant fancy-dress finale. (0870 534 4444). Tonight, Sat 28 Jul, 6.30pm.

iTunes Festival
ICA, SW1

The month of free gigs in the ICA, that has already featured Paul McCartney, Groove Armada and Stereophonics, draws almost to a close with a few smaller acts. Fast-rising London scenester Jack Penate plays tonight, followed by indie rockers the Maccabees tomorrow and eccentric singer-songwriter Duke Special on Sunday. Tickets free from www. itunesfestival.com, till Tue 31 Jul.

GIG OF THE NIGHT: Monkey Swallows the Universe
Tue 31 July, Luminaire, NW6

The number of Sheffield monkey bands now amounts to two, and while this fey quintet are unlikely to capture the imagination to quite the extent of the hugeselling Arctics, they're still worth a look from anyone who wishes Belle and Sebastian would hurry up and make another record. Singer Nat Johnson emotes softly over delicately plucked guitars and cello, contributing to a flawlessly pretty sound that will be too twee for some but should be right at home in the classy surrounds of Kilburn's Luminaire venue. Look out for new tracks from next month's second album The Casket Letters, and do remember to put your mobile on Silent. (020 7372 8668).

Details are correct at the time of publication - please check with venue before booking.
