Chunky Munky spotted on Clapham Common

"I've got Chunky Munky all over my guitar!" laughed Alfie Jackson of cheery north London indie act the Holloways, his reference to a Ben & Jerry's ice cream reflecting the strange feeling of sponsored niceness that permeated this shiny, happy, family-friendly event.
It would be easy to sneer at how only an area such as Clapham could host an event that boast such middle-class attractions as a petting zoo and organic vegetarian food outlet. The absence of a mosh pit may have detracted from the mild punk credentials of a strong set from the Ordinary Boys but the fun enjoyed by the 10,000-strong crowd brought home to me how few other chances there are for children and non-delinquent teenagers to enjoy live music in an environment free of the drunks and druggies who inhabit other festivals.
The Proclaimers provided a suitably benevolent ending to the most efficiently run festival I have attended. 500 Miles provoked the crowd to engage in the closest thing to a frenzy they were going to muster, but the brothers had neither the voices nor the repertoire for a thrilling show. That's just my opinion - the children who spent the set dancing with a giant monkey would doubtless have given it a five-star rating.
