Jaxx make a riotous return

After four albums, a greatest hits and a Grammy, many dance acts would happily drift into the lucrative semi-retirement of film soundtracks and private DJ sets for super-rich fans.
Not so for Brixton duo Felix Buxton and Simon Ratcliffe, who recruited a coterie of garishly clad rappers and divas for their riotous return to SW9, which was more carnival than concert.
"It's great to be back home, Brixton," said Buxton. And the Academy was the busiest I've seen it, which is good news for the four charities the gig will benefit.
Old favourite Red Alert opened the show with wailing vocals and a strident horn section. But while Basement Jaxx are known as hit makers, this was an unpredictable set that even had accordion polka rhythms on Hey U.
Some clubby reworkings misfired - Romeo was cut short, Get Me Off dragged on - but the explosion of sound and colour was always intoxicating.
Ragga tune Jump 'n' Shout, featuring a rapper draped in the British and Jamaican flags, was a moment of wild abandon. But not to be outdone, Buxton sang Where's Your Head At himself, getting the crowd jumping and proving that nerdy DJs can rock out, too.

I saw them at Brixton on Friday for the 3rd time and yet again it was top banana. The beats were fantastic, the vocalists were spot on form especially with their body popping! And you can't really argue with 3 encores! Always guaranteed a good night out with these guys, this is in my top 5 best gigs.
