Smashing a hole in the wall

Presenting dance music live is like a wall that every electronic artist has to scale when they tour. Some, like Mylo, get round the wall with a live band. Basement Jaxx, get over by inviting singers and dancers onstage.
Last night, Simian Mobile Disco smashed a hole in that wall with a performance that delivered enough excitement to thrill the crowd without compromising their electronic roots.
Best known for their remix of We Are Your Friends by Justice - a huge club hit over the past two years - the two-man production powerhouse of James Ford and Jas Shaw adopted a bold approach from the outset.
With a messy bank of keyboards, laptops and other kit placed centre stage, the Simians circled their kit maniacally as the gentle chill-out sound of Sleep Deprivation took on an increasingly hectic pace, a development mirrored by the crowd's increasingly ravey dancing.
At times they twiddled knobs like mad scientists; at others they pranced around the equipment like crazed tribesmen dancing round a totem pole.
It's The Beat contained a sassy female vocal sample but, like almost all their music, had retro electro alongside pumping house. In some ways, the show was more like a great DJ set than a live show but among the crowd, who acted more like Ibiza clubbers than gig-goers, I heard no complaints.
