Alice hangs his head as Lemmy steals the show

Alice Cooper
Pantomime villain: Alice Cooper, the scariest golfer in town

By André Paine
19 Nov 2007

Old rockers showed their durability, and penchant for leather, at the Wembley leg of this nostalgia tour.

Joan Jett has worn rather better than her unthreatening songs. But she did have a brave stab at some new material, while I Love Rock 'n' Roll still displayed an undeniable swagger.

At least Motorhead were as loud and uncompromising as ever, with Lemmy a gruffly charming frontman. "Turn it up, Dave," he uttered casually to the sound man, which was the cue for a bombardment from a band of grizzled men who have been dedicated to making a furious racket for the past three decades.

It was uncomfortable at times with its incessant pounding but no other metal band could come up with such literal-minded, dumb fun as Killed by Death. Ace of Spades was heads-down, rampaging rock and even the obligatory drum solo enlivened the audience.

Alice Cooper was always going to struggle to top that - and he didn't. Instead we got an efficient outing from the scary old singer, who isn't quite as scary when you realise he's a keen golfer.

It wouldn't be quite fair to say he played the same set as last year's tour. But it was still a bit familiar, although his pantomime antics saw him hanged on stage rather than beheaded this time. The show really came to life during School's Out, with Cooper in a top hat, twirling a cane. But it was Lemmy who showed us all how to grow old disgracefully.

Alice can't win, when he did a more stripped down show in recent years, he has been criticised. The fact is Alice energy levels surpass Lemmy and Joan, as they have their instruments to hide behind and don't stray far from their microphone stands. Alice is utilising every inch of the stage and putting 100% into his vocals, then backed by a band who can outplay anyone. Mr Paine if you don't like the Coop just say so, and even better don't go! Give your ticket away to someone who will appreciate a great night of rock in all its forms!

I went to this show in London and thought all the bands were great. I went to see Alice as it was HIS show and his lineup. Alice was fantastic, for a guy who's pushing 60, he is amazing. The best performance I have seen. As they always say "Leave the best till last".
