Staying in front even when looking backwards

Staying in front: Las Vegas pretty boys Panic at the Disco

Look here too

"They'll grow out of it," is the phrase many parents must use to help themselves sleep when their emo-loving children have blown their inheritance on black eyeliner and coffin-shaped rucksacks. Emo's elaborate, anguished lyrics and gloomy uniform have made it a controversial genre but when the scene's key bands seem to be moving on, maybe the kids will too.

My Chemical Romance turned to theatrical stadium rock, now Las Vegas pretty boys Panic at the Disco have undergone the classic teenage about-face and realised the music of their parents was the greatest. Beneath a backdrop of the floral, Victorian cover of their second album, Pretty Odd (visually reminiscent of The Small Faces' Ogden's Nut Gone Flake) the quartet covered The Weight by The Band and previewed several new songs with a looser, bar band feel in contrast to their previously frantic material.

The Green Gentlemen and Mad As Rabbits ditched the tight, angular guitars and forthcoming single Nine in the Afternoon echoed The Beatles in its jaunty pomp. Hardly an original move, but a consistent ear for a fine tune should keep them in front even when they're looking backwards.
