Lennie's gonna go our way

After banging away for nearly 20 years for varying artistic and commercial returns, that Lenny Kravitz will be chiefly remembered for the glorious riff that propels Are You Gonna Go My Way is a part acknowledgement of just how magical those few seconds are and part reminder of just how patchy his canon is.
Last night, that riff was hauled out for the encore. It still bristled with a luminous brilliance, only marginally dimmed by Kravitz's bizarre decision to change into a vest to unleash it.
The 90 minutes that preceded it, however, were of a less focused ("I just want to hang out," he threatened at one terrifying point) but surprisingly rewarding hue.
For all his reputation as a sanitised Jimi Hendrix and a Bowdlerised Prince, Kravitz was his own man who revelled in the clank of Dig In; the turbocharged thump of Bring It On; the heady swirl of Let Love Rule which ended with him on drums and I'll Be Waiting's mesmerising sonic soup.
Late on, a rant against big corporations was a moment of breathtaking hypocrisy at a concert sponsored by a multinational mobile phone company. Then again, rock stars were never supposed to be consistent...
