Modern diva oozes charisma

Charistmatic and firmly in the line of Sarah Vaughan and Dinah Washington, Dianne Reeves was in superb form last night. Consider this modern diva’s range. A gentle bossa nova (Solitude), a great torch-song (One for My Baby), a Michel Legrand classic (Windmills of Your Mind) a gospel floorshaker (A Good Day) from her latest release, When You Know, and a Jon Hendricks tongue-twister (Social Call) including the smuggled-in phrase “vote for Obama” all benefited from her Midas touch. Thad Jones’s jazz standard, A Child is Born, enjoyed three key transitions and a rhapsodic 6/8 pulse.
Behind her noble voice, Venezuelan pianist Peter Martin, Virgin Island bassman Reuben Rogers, Brazilian guitarist Romero Lubambo, a master of both nylon-string guitar and bluesy solid-body Fender, and brilliant Mexican drummer Antonio Sanchez supplied top international support.
Dianne’s Blue Note labelmate Lionel Loueke had earlier opened with some charming Benin guitar enhanced by three-stage sampling that made him a one-man Afro-jazzband. His highly original chordwork on Body and Soul also reflected New York, his home since being championed by Herbie Hancock, a guest on his new album, Karibu. Though no jazz messiah, Loueke is a distinctive talent with a bright future.
