Getting in the festival mood

Rob da Bank
Easy-going: Rob da Bank's DJ set was accompanied by dancers from the English National Ballet

Although it was a late-night indoor event, this inaugural Bandstand felt like the start of the festival season. There was foliage, a few “love teepees” and a Mad Hatter's Tea Party for those who prefer to dance in fancy dress.

The bandstand itself was out of bounds, with a security guard to deter revellers. But this was an otherwise easy-going party that began with Rob da Bank's DJ set accompanied by dancers from the English National Ballet.

Comedy troupe The Cuban Brothers weren't that funny. But their ironic funk made sense here, even with a faithful cover of Lionel Richie's All Night Long.

Brit winner Mark Ronson specialises in cover versions, although his star singers Lily Allen and Amy Winehouse didn't join this brass-laden performance.

Still, he did persuade The Charlatans' Tim Burgess to sing The Only One I Know. He also recruited Sam Sparro to perform his sleek hit Black and Gold. However, Ronson's main weakness was exposed when he then announced Sparro was going to sing “one of mine”: it was actually Stop Me, his cover of The Smiths' song.

Ronson's funked-up reworkings of familiar hits were easy to enjoy, but a set based on other people's songs wasn't entirely nourishing.
