Alphabeat keep it upbeat
Rick Pearson, Evening Standard 6 Jun 2008
It must be a good time to be Alphabeat. The much-lauded Danes came to Koko last night on the same week that their debut looks set to storm the charts. And what better way to celebrate then with an evening of jubilant pop music?
From the opening bars of Fantastic Six, a synth-laden pop gem, this was a set to make even the fiercest of curmudgeons tap a foot and break a smile.
This had a lot to do with the chemistry of lead vocalists Stine Bransen and Anders SG. Visually an odd couple — think Duffy meets Scissor Sisters’ Jake Shears — their close harmonies characterised Eighties-indebted songs such as What Is Happening and Boyfriend.
Recent single 10,000 Nights was triumphantly received by the crowd, even if its sentiment verged on the ridiculous, while Touch Me Touching You had an innocence that belied its raunchy lyrics.
Alphabeat saved the best for last with a rousing encore of Fascination, the debut single. As the final chorus rang out, silver paper cascaded from the Koko ceiling, covering both band and audience. These Danes have every reason to celebrate.
