Rolldeep is real garage band

Rolldeep
Mixed up: Rolldeep combine rap, dancehall and reggae

By John Aizlewood
2 Sep 2008

Best known for The Avenue, their poppy 2005 hit, east London collective Rolldeep have also spearheaded grime, the hyperventilating amalgam of rap, dancehall and reggae.

They arrived late (a robust 11pm), stayed for just five clattering tunes and left, reputation mostly enhanced and new album Return Of The Big Money Sound (which, in what may be a pop first, features Wood Green’s BP garage’s first acknowledgement in song) ceaselessly plugged.

They were an eclectic, ever-rotating, multi-racial posse: men who were small and tall; a man in a cardigan; another desperate to emulate Stereo MCs leader Rob Birch; a token geek; a come-hither woman, plus strays and deadweights. Essentially, it was a gang of men shouting and it carried more thrill than threat, yet, being backed by a supertight band rather than tapes gave the whole experience genuine edge, especially when the room quaked to U Know Dis’s bass. And, for all the obvious lack of rehearsal, there were stars, too. The tiny tempest that was Killa P was as fierce as reggae giant Supercat on U Know Dis but even he was dwarfed by that token geek Manga whose electric cameo on Thunder And Lightnin’ suggested he may follow Rolldeepers Dizzee Rascal and Wiley to acclaim beyond their urban roots.

The chirpy Do Me Wrong, underpinned by a beat similar to that which propelled Farley “Jackmaster” Funk’s Love Can’t Turn Around, featured the sweet vocals of Janee and the sense that the mainstream could be theirs once more. Right now, though, Rolldeep are riding the crest of the closest London has to a musical wave.

Loved it,
Janee was out standing, Scratchy was on fire, J2K dealt with it. I loved the Ska tune with that guy in the cardigan. 100% I m buying that album. Cant wait.
