Biggest star this year: Katy Perry could soon be dominating the charts

She has been No 1 in Britain for a month, her cheeky song about kissing a girl and furthermore, liking it, dominating the airwaves to such an extent that Katy Perry is easily the biggest new pop star of 2008. So what was she doing playing her first London gig for £7.50 in the back room of a King's Cross pub?

Later this month the 23-year-old Californian will play the larger Scala round the corner, but even that is nowhere near big enough to cope with demand for this oversized personality with the bubblegum pink microphone.

The monolithic emerald coach parked at the door was the only indication that something of significance was going on within a venue whose other bookings this week include The Bullitts, Honey Fits and A Child Rasputin (me neither).

Inside, all the middle-aged men reading Music Week and exchanging business cards almost dampened the excitement crackling around the few dozen genuine fans.

Yet when Perry finally appeared, there still ensued a decent amount of the hysteria worthy of a chart topper. Raised a Christian by Methodist minister parents, and with an album of devotional songs already released under her real name Katy Hudson, Perry is now inheriting the earth without being the least bit meek.

With wide, heavily made-up eyes peering suggestively from under a raven Fifties fringe, a cleavage-enhancing top and high-waisted shorts, she looked like she should have been painted on the side of an airplane.

Fresh from an American tour which saw her sharing the stage with numerous punk bands, her all-male band rocked harder than they do on her imminent album, One Of The Boys.

Her sturdy voice, like Pink without the selfloathing, still overpowered the guitars on fast songs with big choruses such as Waking Up In Vegas and Fingerprints. Perry, who goes out with Travis McCoy from the Gym Class Heroes, told the audience she loves London so much she's planning to move here.

She said: "Thanks for popping my cork, London, it's been really messy. I love this city and I want to get a flat here."

She was cackling and unrepentant when it came to her two controversial tracks. Some have accused her of flirting with homosexual culture while deriding it on Ur So Gay and I Kissed A Girl, but they read too much into her lyrics and take her sunny pop too seriously. Anything but cowed, she made a pretend phone call to her mother before the big hit, milking the disapproval that has followed her lately.

Her vibrant performance showed real star quality and could have won over a crowd 10 times bigger than this one. There was no need for a talent this big to start her London assault this small.
