Kasabian rattle through hits

Currently beavering away on their third album, Kasabian briefly resurfaced on Friday to play an acoustic show for Mencap. They were introduced in droll fashion by U2’s The Edge (“I don’t really see what people see in them; they don’t have echo on their guitars or sing about Sixties civil rights leaders”).
An intimate venue heaving with fans delighted to have secured tickets and a big band at ease with both themselves and recasting their music in a different setting usually means nothing can go wrong. It didn’t.
Buoyed by the easy, sweary charm of Tom Meighan (these days adopting Neil from The Young Ones as his style guru) and seated for most of the time, they rattled through hits such as LSF (Lost Souls Forever), covers including a glorious rampage through Del Shannon’s Runaway, the hitherto unheralded B-side Black Whistler and the brand new, rapturously received Thick As Thieves.
A stopgap show to be sure, but one that makes their proper return next year just that little bit more eagerly anticipated.
