Head-tossing intensity from Barb Jungr’s

Intensity is Barb Jungr’s middle name. She has enough personality to fill a large concert hall. In an intimate setting like this, it’s almost overpowering. Egged on by a full house of fans, Barb was at her most bounteous on Saturday, crowning her songs with head-tossing climaxes and interspersing them with lengthy personal glimpses of a showbiz life.
Though she likes to be thought of a jazz singer, her delivery has more of a folk-like directness and her repertoire leans more to Continental chanson, adult pop and US politico-rock. Her seasonal mixed-bag opened with Winter Wonderland and covered many of her favourite songwriters, with Bob Dylan (I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight, Want You So Bad) near the top of the list.
Less predictable were Eric Bibb (Headin’ Home), Ray Davies (Waterloo Sunset), Carole King (Way Over Yonder), the Bee Gees (You Don’t Know What It’s Like) and even a Mexican folk song, Baile con Dios. All this was grist to the mill for Jenny Carr on piano who, faced with the challenge of imitating everything from soft-rock to Mexican street-bands, coped heroically.
Several songs also involved medium-slow waltztime tempos, tricky for improvisers but Barb powered safely home, turning to Nina Simone for her rousing set-closer, I Got Life.
A suitable signature tune.
