Dramatic show from Florence And the Machine

A low-key release schedule means she’s yet to have a hit but the critics’ choice Brit award and year-long buzz for Florence Welch has ensured the 22-year-old from Camberwell is increasingly recognisable by just her first name.
Florence will surely have that hit soon, and her bohemian, blues-pop live shows should build up nicely to the July release of debut album Lungs.
Wafting on stage in robes concealing sparkly hot pants, clutching a bunch of flowers, she got off to an ethereal-sounding start at this first of two Bloomsbury sell-outs. But Florence generally favoured throwing herself around and belting out a soulful vocal for a performance that was dramatic and just a little bit daft.
It’s that eccentric, Kate Bush quality that marks her out from the professional pop divas, while the strength of the songs and a band featuring a harpist and violinist added up to a show that easily held the audience’s attention, despite any unfamiliarity.
Hurricane Drunk proved she can compete with Adele and Duffy on a big, lovelorn chorus. However, she was better when throwing herself into the crowd during the rampaging Dog Days are Over and climbing onto the speakers for the breathtaking Kiss With a Fist.
New single Rabbit Heart (Raise it Up) showed her versatility by drawing on dance music, as did club classic You’ve Got the Love in the encore.
An unlikely but triumphant cover version, it was confirmation that Florence is just the sort of fearless pop star the world needs.
