Get your kicks with Shlomo's vocal tricks

Some of the comedy gigs at this pop‑up waterside venue have been slightly disturbed by noise from passing boats. No such problems for human beatbox Shlomo and his seven cohorts.
Despite having only voices and mics at their disposal, this brilliant, effervescent ensemble of rapping, riiffing, improvising youngsters could drown out the QE2’s foghorn. More music than comedy, but certainly a hoot.
Cheeky Ali G lookalike Shlomo opened with a selection of high‑energy hip-hop classics, producing the requisite squeaks, samples and scratches with just his mouth and some amplification.
Close your eyes and you would be convinced he was using turntables. Or that De La Soul and MC Hammer had strutted onstage. Then just when this seemed pretty good, he explained that this was only the warm-up.
After the interval he was joined by his band. To give an idea of how good they are, the ebullient Bellatrix is current World Beatbox Champion but she had to graft to keep up.
If the friendly multi-racial, mixed-gender group had a whiff of youth club, it was soon dispelled by the slick theatrics that would probably have wowed Britain’s Got Talent.
Their soulful vocal gymnastics would definitely have wiped the floor with Susan Boyle. Move over SuBo, and make way for Shlomo.
